Why I Wrote Faith for This Moment

18 September, 2018

Faith for this Moment is actually a book that has been 19 years in the making. It is the result of planting a church in a proudly progressive city, Portland, Oregon, and continually asking the question, “How can the church be faithful to Jesus, a blessing to the world, and transformed by the Spirit of God all at the same time”? Cities like Portland have a powerful secular pull. In short, American culture makes disciples of us all. So for 19 years I have been wrestling with the question and leading a great community of people into this mission of faithfulness and blessing.

Something in American culture has shifted in the last few years. We are increasingly polarized in and out of the church, increasingly secular in our views towards what it means to be human, and increasingly consumeristic. The danger in all of this is that the church would be caught up and assimilated into American secularity, politics, polarization, and consumer greed.
That is why I wrote the book now. I truly believe that now, more than ever, we are at a turning point in our culture, and what is required is that the Church find a fresh way to be the people of God now.
How can we be faithful to Jesus, transformed by the Gospel and a blessing to the world without becoming assimilated into the world’s values, polarization, and greed?
Turning to the scriptures, I discovered that the people of God have always lived in times like ours, and the good news is that God has been faithful to them. Many times God’s people discovered how to faithfully love God and be a blessing to the world around them, willing to suffer for Christ and not be assimilated into the values of their cultural moment. My prayer is that through this book you will discover how to be faithful to Jesus and join a long line of witnesses who have lived attractive lives of grace while looking to the hope of another world to come.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and questions as you read the book and perhaps we can navigate this moment together.
